Lauscha, Germany was where the first Christmas ornaments were made. Its popularity boosted when Prince Albert, German native, gifted glass baubles and ornaments to Queen Victoria for her Christmas tree and London newspaper published a picture of the beautiful tree.

The people who immigrated to North America brought the custom with them; brighter colors and bigger knick-knacks came into being as society thrived. F.W. Woolworth was amazed to see Lauscha’s ornaments when he visited Germany and began importing them in 1880 which earned him a fortune of $25 million worth of ornaments in 1890.

On the other hand, the production of these ornaments was still being carried out in Lauscha until WWII after which all the glass-works business came to a halt. The altering trends during the 1960 resulted in the replacement of these glass ornaments with trees and ornaments made from aluminum.

Presently, these ornaments are part of a classic Christmas decoration and if found, form part of a collector’s items. Private firms of were launched by a lot of the real glass blowing companies that continued to produce ornaments demanded worldwide. In conclusion, these ornaments are now produced from plastic and imported in bulk in almost every shape possible. Although, the glass ornaments still have not lost their value as they are bought and collected from booming markets in central Europe.
